What Do Occupational Therapists Do to Cause a Positive Change in Their Patient's Functioning?
The patient is encouraged to bring about positive change in an incremental way within their capacity, so that they grow a sense of success and efficiency. The change that occurs may be anatomical, physiological, reorganization of tissue or may be behavioral adaptation.
- Occupational Therapists facilitate ongoing recovery or change using skilled therapeutic mechanisms
- People change and restore their independence and function because they engage in meaningful activities
- Undergo a process of development by which new capacities and abilities are gained
- Learn and acquire new abilities and skills
- Engage in a positive and meaningful relationship with a therapist who guides them toward success by motivating them, by creating a climate that inspires them to identify and solve problems and by providing a genuine sense of caring and expectation of what is possible
Occupational Therapy is skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence in all facets of their lives. Occupational Therapy assists people in developing the "skills for the job of living" necessary for independent and satisfying lives.
